Brit Milah, or ritual circumcision, is a Jewish religious ceremony performed on male infants, traditionally on the eighth day after birth. It represents the covenant between God and the Jewish people, as described in the Hebrew Bible, and is considered a fundamental religious obligation in Judaism.
The ritual is usually performed by a trained religious practitioner called a mohel, and today it is commonly carried out with medical oversight or in clinical settings. In most Jewish communities, modern hygienic methods are used.
A small number of ultra-Orthodox communities historically practiced a method known as metzitzah b’peh, in which oral suction was used as part of the ritual.
