  1. 1. Summary

President Lee Jae Myung stated on the 29th, in response to labor unions opposing the deployment of humanoid robots in production sites, “You cannot avoid the massive cart rolling downhill,” adding, “If this is the world we are heading toward, we must prepare and adapt in advance.” This appears to be a reference to the Hyundai Motor Union’s opposition, announced on the 22nd, which declared, “Not a single unit can be deployed without a labor-management agreement,” regarding the introduction of the humanoid robot ‘Atlas’ to production sites.

    3. My opinion

Lee Jae-myung administration have two contradictory goals. Enhancing working conditions while pushing for rapid state-led AI transition. How can workers’ rights be protected when AI and robots are replacing them?

Lee Jae-Myung seems to think the concept of “Basic Society” could solve this contradiction. Basic Society should be understood as “Universal Basic Service” which the government provides guaranteed services and incomes for all of its citizens. Think as UBI + free and flexible job training program + state-guaranteed social services. In this concept, a citizen would constantly flip between students-workers to catch up with rapidly changing industries. When you lose job because robots, you will be assigned job training opportunities and basic income & service needed while you transition to a new industry.
