  1. **Submission statement:** Because of rising crime rates in Costa Rica, they are expected to elect a hardliner on crime who promises to replicate Bukele-style tactics & policies in order to reduce the control of gangs in the nation. This is another example of a nation moving towards potentially undemocratic solutions on crime & violence because of the inability (both perceived & actual) of politicians to reduce crime.

    I will point out that people shouldn’t take it as a given that Bukele-style policies will be successful at reducing crime, even as they erode civil liberties. Daniel Noboa in Ecuador explicitly campaigned promising a Bukeleist crackdown on crime and has been totally unsuccessful in that regard. Even though he won reelection, his approval has since fallen and his efforts to amend the constitution via referendum went down in flames. Just something worth keeping in mind.
