Because for years, nursing was seen as something of a get rich quick scheme with guaranteed job security. Or at least very lucrative. So materialistic and shallow thinking people go into the field.

because nursing/medical assistants of some kind are an easy field to break in to with a low skillset and still offer a livable wage. It doesnt require the training of a doctorate and the field is in high demand. There is a nationwide shortage of medical professionals.
nursing always seems to be a fallback option for young people, women especially, who have trouble after highschool/college finding a job in a desired field. So they go back to school for 2 – 4 yrs, learn how to insert catheters, IV’s, and other daily medical tasks, then you can get a job just about anywhere in the US.
Those people who have trouble finding jobs are usually the purple haired, nosering having young people who majored in decolonizing lesbian interpretive dance theory word salad and are shocked to learn there arent any 100k yr jobs with that degree. So they go back to school, become a nurse but still have that hateful liberal programming from before and panic at the thought of having to medically assist someone wearing a red hat.
