  1. The Eritrean government has rejected claims from Ethiopia that its soldiers had illegally entered Ethiopian territory. These comments come at a time of heightened uncertainty for the region more broadly; between the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, an upsurge in rebel activity around Tigray, continued instability in Somalia and increased attention to Somaliland, there is the risk that a conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia, two countries with longstanding tensions, could spiral into something greater. Ethiopia’s genocidal actions against the Tigray were utterly shocking to see, not least considering the previous reputation of Abiy Ahmed, and there being the risk of another, broader conflict on the horizon, not least seeing as Eritrea was still part of its southern neighbour in living memory, is something that could have significant ramifications, both regionally and globally. Perhaps it doesn’t mean much, especially from somebody with little broad awareness of the situation, but I hope that more people don’t have to suffer the losses wrought by war, even if it remains limited.
