Water outages push Johannesburg residents to the edge

  1. Submission statement:

The article describes the ongoing water crisis in Johannesburg. Large parts of the city have gone weeks without water, including some middle class areas. The current mayor of Joburg is from the ANC, as is the Premier of Gauteng Province. Neither have done well in responding to the crisis.

2026 is an election year for South Africa, and the DA leader Helen Zille is campaigning for Joburg mayor.

This story is relevant because the crisis is driven primarily by governance, not drought, and because that could shift the election outcomes later this year.

Also, I am worried that I don’t post enough about ANC government failures, and post too much nuance stuff. So this is also a bit of a calibration article.

I hope this is relevant and/or interesting to the sub. In theory a major city having serious water cuts should be news. But I recognise that “bad governance triggers major crisis in South Africa” is well… not exactly news.
