We do not affirm the anorexic that they are indeed the fat slob they believe themselves to be and encourage them to stop eating. Nor do we enable their destructive behavior.
We do not affirm the clinically depressed that they are indeed the burden they believe themselves to be and encourage them to do everyone a favor and end it already. Nor do we enable their destructive behavior.
We do not affirm to the addict that their future is without hope and they should find as much comfort in the bottle or in the isolation of their drugs as they possibly can. Nor do we enable their destructive behavior.
Yet somehow we’ve managed to carve out an exception which allows – rewards – enabling destructive behavior because it is a useful means by which to demonstrate our “virtue” and advance an ideological agenda.
