[Matthew Yglesias](https://substack.com/@matthewyglesias) writes an interesting article discussing that while AI will of course cause hundreds of millions of white collar workers in the West to be laid off soon, at least these are the countries with the AI firms, wealth, and social welfare capable to take care of the unemployed masses.

What will Egypt, Nigeria, India do? What about the tens of thousands of call center workers in the Phillipines?

Furthermore Matthew adds, we will soon be at the point where every human body in any given nation is a liability. Every human in country X is just someone the government will have to take care of from the abundant wealth AI and robotic automation will generate. Humans will not be needed for ANY work in two decades.

There will be a severe restriction on immigration both because there will be less need for any workers at all, bar some medical workers, and because every worker will be viewed as a liability.

The world will be split into 3 parts : wealthy developed countries where humans are just taken care of by AI (North America, Europe, China, Japan, etc), Resource nations (Saudi Arabia, China, Brazil, etc) that provide the material needed, and approximately 4 billion people with no hope of ever escaping poverty.

the argument for AI causing mass layoffs is questionable IMO but if you do believe it will cause mass layoffs than you should be concerned about global poor the most.

I really hope that this technology rapidly takes off rather than prolonged development/implementation. Like it would be better if something like a super intelligence is created tomorrow rather than it slowly taking off and having to deal with industries collapsing 1 by 1. If it’s all at once, if we are all removed from the labor force at once, I think making decisions will be far easier than having to deal with the chaos that would be union/licensed rent seeking in the age of AI. It would also be kind of freeing if it came at once. Our sort of model of value would collapse. What difference would it make if your as smart as Newton if the AI dwarfs you by thousands of orders of magnitude. So there would be this natural equality.
