I had assumed Witkoff was one of those advisors but this doesn’t sound like it based off this.

No one told them this is existential for the Iranian regime? They built a good portion of their image as vehemently anti-American.
No doubt they are scared shitless of the US behemmoth building next to them but they don’t want to lose face. Especially with the kinds of demands given to them. They are in a bind

Qatar must be sweating bullets rn. They’re the #1 country currently pulling for a diplomatic solution (even Saudi has intimated they wouldn’t mind a lil’ regime change), they probably told Trump via their top guy Witkoff that Iran would take a deal, only to be unable to make Iran take it on their end (for a plethora of reasons).

I mean, if the US makes it this clear from the onset that boots on the ground is off the table, then the calculations change dramatically.
Sure they could take Khamenei, the fucker’s old as hell anyway. If you look at the IRGC, you see a bunch of hardened terrorists wildly more radicalized than whatever Maduro had on his hands. They also have a full pack of experience ready to destabilize whatever next government of Iran (if they themselves aren’t the next government that is), having done so all over the Middle East.

“capitulated” = bribe him
[Lindsey Graham complained to Axios that many of Trump’s advisors don’t want him to strike.](https://www.axios.com/2026/02/22/graham-trump-iran-strike-aides-oppose)
