Lowkey I feel like being the poorer southerners that owned like one slave is almost worse than the big plantation owners. Like the big ones, they’re probably born into it, seeing it all through the lens of an operation at scale, probably insulated from the day to day with a class of free workers doing most of the enforcement and dirty work.

Meanwhile Joebob and Louella just have a dude living in slavery in the shed out back of their shitty little house, who they fucking *saved up to buy* after dreaming about the possibility and their dumbfuck ancestors are going to go around talking about how they weren’t “real” slaveowners so it’s totally ok 160 years later

DS9 is easily the most neoliberal Star Trek show: it’s cosmopolitan with its setting at the nexus between the gamma and alpha quadrant; running of the station is coordinated by Bajorans and the Federation (an analogue for modern day bilateral coordination between nations); and it’s got bars and bars of Latinum. Oh that sweet Latinum
