Imagine how unbelievably pathetic a moment in your life that must be. You’re a general, a man with thousands of soldiers under your command, and yet you don’t even have the courage to turn your head and see where the noises are coming from. Instead, you keep staring straight ahead like a little bitch, pretending nothing is happening.
All around you are the faces of other men doing the exact same thing, men who also don’t dare to move, don’t dare to look, don’t dare to act. And you all know it. Every single one of you knows that the others are just as afraid to turn around. Together you form this massive, living monument to cowardice, a pathetic spectacle of shame, a moment that feels like one of the lowest points imaginable for the United States.
And somewhere in the back of your mind you know this moment will live on forever. It will be recorded, replayed, remembered. Your descendants will see it. Generations from now, people carrying your name will watch that moment and realize that their ancestor, this “general” didn’t even have the guts to turn around for a single second.
