    He got high off of the easy win in Venezuela. This will drag out for years.

  2. Given the other war aims, this one seems nearly impossible given the bombing campaign and lack of will to use ground troops and nation build.

    He got lucky with Venezuela and thinks he can replicate it here, but this situation is so much more complex.

    This is also an easy out. All he has to do now is say “I approve of the current guy” and then run away if need be. I don’t think his ego will allow him to do that, but it’s an option.

  5. This is why all of the “I don’t like Trump, but the Ayatollah was bad and needed to go” takes on here immediately following his death were so short-sighted. For one, regime changes cannot magically transform a country into a liberal democracy.

    More importantly, if your country orchestrates a regime change, you’re ultimately responsible for what happens next. The Trump administration is quite possibly the last administration in U.S. history you would want to manage the leadership transition of another country.
