We had CANZUK in my parents’ time. Why not today – and more?

I know CANZUK is a very debatable thing here, but the article as a whole is making an argument for greater labor mobility with all our partners. For example, the EU and other high-income Asian countries. It definitely seems like the next step to take once we get through all our new agreements for material trade and defense.

The article advocates for more mobility with the US, and I’m not opposed, but the reason I think it’s generally an important topic now is because not many people want to move to the US. Keeping everyone here at home turns the country insular, and we need to find other partners to get Canadians out into the world. It’s a big part of our soft power.

Didn’t the UK leave a giant trade bloc over concerns about open borders? I don’t know why the UK would join a new trading bloc with free labor mobility. The EU was much closer, economically and geographically, than Canada, NZ, and Australia.
