Submission statement:
Carney's government is now that much closer to a majority, being two seats shy. There are currently 3 by-elections scheduled for April. The two in Toronto poll heavily in favour of the liberals, while the one in Quebec was always more of an uncertain tossup.

What discussion could happen:

Carney getting a majority would allow a lot more bills to pass, as a lot have been tied up in committee, but there have been good adjustments to some of the bills that could have otherwise been rammed through. Minorities have their place but in times of great conflict having a stronger central government allows it to act quicker and stronger.

Are elected officials changing parties good for democracy? While we are supposed to vote for the person not the party, a lot of people consider the party or the party leader more important than the individual representative.

With easy victories all but guaranteed in University—Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest, the Liberal Party is basically a month away from securing a majority of 172. Winning the much tougher contest in Terrebonne is no longer necessary. However, a 1 seat majority isn’t exactly smooth sailing since there will be more byelections to come from potential Liberal resignations like Nate Erskine-Smith.

Additional thoughts I have: having other people defect to the liberal party before the by elections means it will be an election that gives Carney his majority, not an individual floor crosser. The order it happens is ultimately inconsequential, but I think it’s politically smarter to earn the majority in an election, even if it is heavily favoured for them.

While it seems like a weird time for the NDP to cross over with Carney’s somewhat controversial and flipflopping statements on Iran this last week, I think the fact this article released today https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/liberals-support-ndp-arms-control-9.7122738 probably has something to do with it. If Carney is going to allow for some more free votes when it comes to policies (especially something like that which will never be passed), it does show he isn’t strong arming the progressive side of the party as much as he could be.

  3. My personal, unsubstantiated opinion is that Carney clearly called the by elections because he knew this was coming instead of holding off on them for a snap election.
