I broadly support the war but this is dumb. It would be better and easier to just seize tankers carrying oil coming away from Kharg, like we’ve been doing in the Atlantic, rather than seizing an export terminal which is basically just expensive infrastructure we can’t move and could easily destroy from the air if we wanted to

What motivation would Iran have to open the strait if they wouldn’t be able to send oil through it themselves, because of all the US Marines occupying their oil-exporting island?

Seizing the island is certainly militarily possible, though likely not without significant loss of life, and holding it would be a different matter as troops there would be sitting ducks.
But I fail to understand why they think this would force the Iranians to reopen Hormuz. They are well aware that they’re inflicting crippling political damage on Trump by keeping it closed and they’ll have no incentive to stop doing so if you give them less to lose by fighting.
