Before some smarty pants says conservatism was alwyas like this I’m willing to bet the thesis is using conservatism to refer to the specific ideological alliance of businesses and social conformists that more or less functioned with the understanding that a capitalist meritocracy would preserve traditional social hierarchies and values of austerity, piery, and gentry, and vice versa. A sort of “good fathers make good businessmen, good businessmen make good fathers” alliance, that broke down when the party compromised on abortion and acquiesced fully to Liberals on divorce, secularizarion, and gay marriage.
