A lot of people don’t realize that the Taliban imposed a strict ban on opium production in 2000; which led to a near total collapse (90-95%) of opium production in Afghanistan. When the US came in and the Afghani government collapsed, centralized control over the rural provinces weakened to the extent that farmers went back to producing opium. The US inadvertently revitalized Afghanistans drug business.
