In a blow for trans rights, Indian parliament has been passed by Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Indian parliament. This had passed earlier in the Lok Sabha, the lower house by a voice vote amid opposition walkout.
The bill was passed amid opposition concerns in the Rajya Sabha with a voice vote. This is another bill in a long series of NDA’s complete erasure of parliamentary democracy and accountability, where they ignore any and all impact of bill and just shove it through using their majority.
Manoj Kumar Jha (RJD), Saket Gokhale (TMC), CPI (M) MP John NCP-SP MP Fauzia Khan, YSRCP’s Golla Baburao, Indian Union Muslim League MP MP Abdul Wahab , SS-UBT MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, DMK MP Tiruchi Siva (a leader on trans rights legislation), Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury, Actress and SP MP Jaya Bachhan all opposed the bill and called for it to be sent to a select committee.
One of the government MPs went on a disgusting biological essentialist diatribe in favor of the bill, but I’m not gonna post it here.
What’s next: Lets hope that Supreme Court strikes this unconstitutional law down.

Why isn’t the word “Indian” or “India’s” in the title? Even with the South Asia tag, you can’t tell what country this applies to without opening the article or looking at the comments.
