‘This is our God: Jesus, King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war,’ said Leo. ‘Jesus does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them and says: ‘No matter how much you pray, I will not listen: your hands are full of blood,’ said the Pope, citing a parallel passage.
Although Leo did not name specific world leaders, he has stepped up his criticism of the war in Iran in recent weeks. The Pope has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire in the conflict and said on Monday that military air strikes are indiscriminate and should be banned.
According to some observers, the speech is directly aimed at some American officials who use Christian language to justify the joint American and Israeli attacks on Iran. Recently, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth began a Christian prayer service at the Pentagon, in which he prayed for ‘overwhelming force against those who deserve no mercy’.
