Came across this pretty good piece from The UnPopulist.
We love memes about the cult of personality and I myself am always down for dunking on the people who helped elect Trump in 2024, but a massive chunk of his base is driven purely by negative partisanship. They don’t necessarily want the baggage, but they perceive the alternative as an elitist monoculture that is actively out of touch with their day-to-day reality. It’s a frustrating read if you’re a policy nerd, but it’s essential for understanding why throwing white papers and fact-checks at the electorate doesn’t move the needle when the fundamental deficit is cultural trust.

We’ve already heard the mantra that Kamala will be worse and that “things would be even worse if the Dems were in charge, now.”
I know this isn’t a productive conclusion, but it sure *sounds* like more culty doubling down than any kind of honest introspection

They’re the ones who are out of touch and at some point society is going to have to rip off the bandaid and stop humoring their deviancy.

I know people meme on “No Kings” messaging for being out of touch and it kinda is out of touch.
But people do unironically view Trump as a divine monarch. They don’t care what he does and may actively disagree with it. They just vaguely know he should rightfully be in charge.
Republicans don’t have that privilege however. Going after say Kristi Noem or Stephen Miller is much more successful as they are seen as corrupting influences on the divine monarch.

I believe they’re one and the same phenomenon.
The trump cult of personality partly perpetuates to some by continuing to inject in their minds the notion that a party that supports expending Healthcare, taxing the rich, and opposes frivolous war, is out of touch and elite.
The stereotypes trump voters have about the democratic party are themsleves myths of the republican imperial cult, that Trump is, like him or not, saving you from woke blue haired perverts who don’t care about your crumbling roads or Healthcare bills because they want to debate how many genders can dance on the head of a pin.
