The crew of Artemis II is set to travel farther from Earth than any humans since Apollo program, reaching distances beyond the Moon during their mission. This puts them in deep space, outside much of Earth’s natural protection from radiation which is something only a handful of astronauts have ever experienced.
Because the conditions they encountered like deep-space radiation, isolation beyond Earth’s protection, and pushing human limits closely mirror the very origin story of the Fantastic Four. In Stan Lee’s fiction, four astronauts venture into space, are bombarded by cosmic rays, and return forever changed. It’s set to occur with these Artemis II crew of four as well if there’s a safe high-energy radiation exposure.
While superheroes haven’t been created yet, it does mirror the real science behind stories like the Fantastic Four, where cosmic radiation in deep space plays a key role. Artemis II shows that humans are once again pushing into the same extreme environment that once inspired those ideas… this time, for real.
