China scratched our back and now wants us to scratch theirs. They’ve applied to join the CPTPP a while back, and it seems we’re seen as their way in.
Something else to note, not in the article, but Taiwan has been having trouble joining. While the CPTPP allows for a separate customs territory to join, China would be upset if Taiwan joins the bloc. Don’t know how much of a consideration that would be, given how valuable Taiwan’s exports are, but China doesn’t meet the membership criteria anyhow.

I recall reading (god knows where) months ago the Carney’s vision is to stitch the TPP and the EU together as a counterbalance to China and the US. That is obviously incompatible with China joining the TPP.

I can’t read the article right now because archive.ph isn’t working, so can anyone tell me whether or not China is threatening any concequences if we do not cooperate with them with regards to CPTPP?
