Unrelated to the topic at hand, but I’m automatically more suspicious of authors who post in Foreign Policy rather than Foreign Affairs. Something about the Foreign Policy website just automatically makes it less credible to me, like it’s the bastard brother of Foreign Affairs.

Relevance: global relations especially in the light of unilateral US actions in Venezuela and Iran (and maybe Cuba, oh and on and off Greenland). The article argues that because china isn’t like the soviets, where the soviets were also everywhere militarily, the US didn’t feel the restraint towards attacking Iran. In the past such an action would’ve needed to calculate the soviets military response. Now because China is extremely cautious towards basically anything outside of Asia, no such restraint exists.
I’m so tempted to put this as meme because the vibe it’s giving off is very much in the vein of “why didn’t you stop me from hurting myself”, except the person saying that is a fully grown roided up man and not a little kid.
