      This is an extremely weird point I’m about to make but I think people can’t really consume shows that don’t take themselves seriously or aren’t meant for you to have a serious emotional attachment to characters.

      The show I can think of most recently that’s attained success is Smiling Friends. You’re not *really* supposed to have a heavy emotional attachment to them. They’re funny creatures in insane situations. But a lot of people kind of take them as emotional support characters, hope they have plotlines, or a bunch of weird shit that isn’t really the thesis of the show.

      On the one hand, I hate that I have become convinced that the play Dems should be making for the foreseeable future is going full cynic and effectively de-facto disenfranchising the maximum number of right-leaning voters possible. I remember how pissed I used to get at gerrymandering and voter suppression.

      On the other hand, the GOP has only continued to prove, year by year, that it is an organization by and for actively evil imbeciles, so. Not much of value to be lost there.

      Kind of a hot take but I think how most people come to an ideology is a lot less based on rational thought and belief and more of a fancy coat of paint for tribalism, biases, and prejudices of other people.

      The reason a lot of weird people seem to be somewhat consistent ideologically is because they don’t come to the conclusions many people do and that’s alien to a lot of people.
