In the 19th c, noblemen “with more rank than money” lent their names as directors of companies (which thus hoped to attract investors) for the guinea and meal provided at each board meeting; they were called guinea pigs. The actual guinea pig came not from Africa but from Guiana, in South America. But the term guinea was applied loosely, usually in scorn, to various persons, as to Italians; and to the midshipmen of the British navy—explained by saying “The guinea pig is neither a pig nor a native of Guinea; a midshipman is neither a sailor nor an officer” (see medhi). In this century, the South American rodent was found useful in experimentation, whence the use of guinea pig for a human so used.

      Not sure this entire etymological chain is correct, but I do think it’s kind of fun

      I really will never understand why my American co-religionists love Trump so much when he has about as much contempt for Christianity as the most fedora-tipping reddit athiest.
