Submission Statement: Over the last two months, dozens of people have been killed across the region in clashes between security officials and protesters from the group Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) protesting over concerns including electricity prices, education and health care. Medical staff reports to the BBC that the majority of casualties are young people ranging from 15 to their late 30s. The BBC witnessed food shortages, with many protesters sharing what they had with one another. Most shops were shuttered. Some told the BBC of efforts to smuggle in bags of rice on the backs of motorbikes.
Given how Pakistan-administered Kashmir has become a critical part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as well as ongoing tensions between Pakistan and India, instability in the region is likely to have a downstream impact to the security structure across South Asia and the Middle East.
