The Antikythera Mechanism raises an uncomfortable question about how complete our picture of ancient technology really is. More than 2,000 years ago, Greek engineers built a device that used bronze gears to calculate astronomical cycles and predict eclipses. Only about a third survives, yet its fragments contain evidence of remarkable mechanical sophistication.
I made this video because the knowledge behind the object interests me as much as the object itself. What earlier machines, specialized tools and generations of craftsmanship made it possible? If these fragments had never been recovered, how much evidence would we have for this level of engineering?
