Figure AI founder and CEO Brett Adcock announced on X that robots at the American startup have outnumbered people for the first time.
According to the chart that Adcock added to the post, by the second quarter of 2026, the number of robots at Figure AI reached approximately 740, while the company has about 650-660 employees (with only 314 full-time employees, the rest working on a contract or hourly basis).
Figure AI is a robotics startup founded in 2022 that designs humanoid robots to perform real-world tasks. It has since received funding from Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, and Jeff Bezos, and has also entered into a high-profile partnership with BMW to deploy the Figure 01 humanoids at the automaker’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant.
Figure also recently gained attention after a “Man vs. Machine” experiment, in which a humanoid robot competed against a human trainee during a 10-hour shift sorting packages. The worker ultimately performed the task more efficiently and won the test, but Adcock suggested that the victory was only temporary.
More and more companies are now turning to automation and artificial intelligence. Data from layoffs.fyi shows that an estimated 119,862 workers have lost their jobs at tech companies around the world since the beginning of the year. Coincidentally or not, almost simultaneously with the Figure AI announcement, the head of JD.com, one of China’s largest e-commerce groups, warned that the company’s 700,000 couriers “sooner or later” would be replaced by robots.
Meanwhile, investors and analysts predict that humanoid robots will become the new trillion-dollar business.
