A McDonald’s employee in Georgia was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison plus 3 years supervised release for literally setting the restaurant’s dumpster on fire.

Worked for many fast food restaurants in management and saw all levels of employees engage in all sorts of improper conduct including theft, vandalism, violence, even dumpster fires, etc, but these were always local crimes, never saw the ATF/FBI get involved. This was a made into a federal case brought against an hourly employee that was angry about the restaurant being too crowded on a busy night. Yes, the restaurant had to be evacuated and local fire dept had to put out the fire. The restaurant itself didn't catch fire, no injuries either.

To the attorneys and civil libertarians out there, how did the federal courts get jurisdiction? Was this case more about the U.S. Attorney making a name for himself? This case is concerning, what's next, break a window at a Walgreens Drug store or Burger King, shoplift from Target and that's now a federal crime? Have seen people convicted of killing someone like DUI, bar fights, brawls get less. 5 years in prison is lunacy!
