I think the biggest difference between the libertarian vs liberal philosophy is the distinction that although libertarians believe in the goals of freedom and equality to a similar extent; They often are mischaracterized as unempathetic or lacking comprehension of the realities of monopoly interest in market systems. Libertarians themselves often view liberals in a similar way as being naïve to the realities of government, and dismiss the claims that governments can have fundamental roles in creating those same monopolies they claim are at issue. Libertarians view government as a corporation that is historically and in practice more accountable to those same monetary interest and thus don't see a means of them acting like a just arbitrator of business, and individual action.
In example:
liberals see pure capitalism as the fox guarding the hen house being the worker.
Conservatives see the government caging the lion of enterprise.
Libertarians see both the government and corporations as wolves encroaching on the individual freedom and economic activity.
