South Africa backs the independence of Western Sahara, which has led to strained relations with Morocco.
Morocco is a U.S. ally, and the Trump administration has pushed strongly for recognition of the sovereignty of Morocco over all of Western Sahara, with an autonomous region for the Sahrawi people.
In addition to being an interesting development for the Mediterranean/North Africa, these policies will highlight yet another point of disagreement between the U.S. and South Africa.
