U.S. President Donald Trump, after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, said that whether a ceasefire agreement is reached now depends on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and urged him to accept it. He also said that after the summit, there is no longer any need to consider raising tariffs on China.
On the 15th (local time), in an interview with Fox News after holding a summit with President Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, Trump said, “Ultimately, it is up to President Zelensky to tie up this issue. There are still one or two important matters left to be resolved.”
He continued, “The most important thing is President Zelensky’s agreement,” adding that a meeting between President Putin and President Zelensky would soon be arranged.
Regarding the fact that the summit ended with “no deal,” Trump said, “We talked for three hours and agreed on many points. We made considerable progress and had in-depth discussions on various issues.”
Trump added, “Today’s meeting went very well. After today’s meeting, I don’t need to think about tariffs on China anymore.” The U.S. had previously considered wielding large-scale tariffs as a weapon, arguing that China was supporting Russia’s war funds through trade.
Finally, regarding his meeting with Putin, Trump said, “I would give it 10 out of 10. I got along with him very well. It is a good thing when two nuclear powers get along. We are number one, and Russia is number two.”
On the 15th (local time), Trump and Putin met for about three hours at the Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in northern Anchorage, Alaska. This was the first time President Putin had set foot on Western soil since the outbreak of the war in February 2022, and the first summit with a U.S. president in four years and two months since June 2021.
However, the summit ended with “no deal” on a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. At a joint press conference that day, President Trump said, “We had very meaningful and productive talks. We have a very good opportunity to get there.” When President Putin suggested, “Let’s meet in Moscow,” Trump replied, “I’ll look into that. It might be possible.”
In connection with this, President Putin said, “We are convinced that in order to achieve a long-term solution to this conflict, it is necessary to eliminate the root causes, take into account all of Russia’s legitimate concerns, and restore a fair ‘security balance’ in Europe and the entire world.” He also said, “I agree with President Trump’s statement that Ukraine’s security must be naturally guaranteed, and of course we are ready to work toward that.”
