President Lee Jae-myung’s approval rating has risen to 59%, according to a poll released on the 29th. The outcome of his recent six-day tour of the United States and Japan is seen as having contributed to this positive evaluation.
According to a survey conducted by Gallup Korea from the 26th to the 28th on 1,000 adults nationwide aged 18 and older, 59% of respondents said President Lee was “doing well.” This marked a 3 percentage-point increase from the previous week. Negative evaluations stood at 30%, down 5 percentage points. “No opinion” was 11%.
President Lee’s approval rating had been on a two-week decline before rebounding in this survey. Positive ratings were especially high among Democratic Party supporters and progressives (in the 90% range), and among those in their 40s and 50s (around 70%). Among moderates, 62% gave positive evaluations. Among conservatives and People Power Party supporters, negative views still dominated, but negative responses dropped by about 10 percentage points, returning to levels seen two weeks earlier.
Party support ratings were recorded as: Democratic Party at 44% and People Power Party at 23%. The Democratic Party remained unchanged from the previous survey, while the People Power Party fell by 2 percentage points. The Reform Party was at 3%, the Cho Kuk Innovation Party at 2%, and the Progressive Party at 1%.
In a separate poll measuring favorability toward leaders of the four countries surrounding the Korean Peninsula, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba ranked highest at 27%, followed by U.S. President Donald Trump (24%), Chinese President Xi Jinping (10%), and Russian President Vladimir Putin (4%). In terms of unfavorability, President Putin scored the highest at 88%, followed by President Xi (76%), President Trump (67%), and Prime Minister Ishiba (51%).
