My opinion is not particularly important or enlightened, but in light of recent events I feel the need to share a few thoughts.

Firstly, democracy is a system that desperately requires restraint and humility.

For American society to function, it’s imperative that we value the lives and opinions of all Americans, especially those we disagree with. This is because democracy depends not on uniformity of thought, but on our ability to coexist peacefully despite our differences. Valuing someone's opinion doesn't mean you need to agree; it only requires recognizing their humanity.

Secondly, killing someone for their beliefs or for what they've said is wholly undemocratic and antithetical to the American ideals of democracy and free expression. If you support political violence, please consider that you are endorsing the kind of violence that could just as easily be committed against you or your loved ones. We shouldn't take for granted the peace most of us enjoy in our daily lives.

Lastly, the next time you feel like arguing with someone online, or generalizing about large swaths of the public, consider that most Americans broadly want the same things at the end of the day. Don't confuse anger or passion for certainty. The road to Hell is paved with righteous anger.
