I started digging into what OpenAI’s actually building with ChatGPT and ended up down a worrying rabbit hole this time. From what I can see, they’re not just making a smarter chatbot they’re also quietly working on building an AI Operating System.

Not just an app. The operating system itself.

Think about that: ChatGPT as the kernel  of your home PC, the layer that talks directly to your hardware. The goal is to create a single conversational hub that remembers everything about you,  your files, emails, chats, preferences, even how you think and uses that context to “run your life.” It would be like having an actual personal assistant working for you as a secretary of sorts only this one knows EVERYTHING about you including your search history…..

The problem, which you probably also see is, traditional OSs like Windows or macOS are deterministic: input equals output. The new AI OS is probabilistic it guesses, it interprets, it changes. You would really control it; you discuss solutions with it. Same command today, different result each time based on the circumstances and its advice. Don’t get me started on the scope there for more algorithm style influence.

Also, once your entire digital life is stored inside a system that “learns” you, leaving it isn’t just inconvenient it’s like erasing yourself and starting all over again. For those of us “trapped” in the Apple ecosystem (I love and hate iMessage) this could be that, times a thousand…

Because when your OS needs your memories to function and uses that data to improve itself, you’re not the user anymore. You’re the product and the consumer.

It’s one of the more unsettling analyses I’ve come across recently but I don’t see it being avoided, it’s like a giant iceberg ahead and we are heading straight for it.
