Perhaps the prevailing argument of this administration’s foreign policy stems from the notion of spheres of influence. Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina are our back yard. Ukraine is Russia’s, Taiwan and S. Korea are China’s. But I was thinking of the actual distances to each of these places. So I got a list compiled by Google comparing flight times between DC and major geopolitical capitals.
This list seems to refute the premise of what is most important to us based on proximity. Actually Russia is as close as 2.5 miles from the US border. We have territories established far into the Pacific and bases in strategic locations in Europe and the Middle East. We’re definitely set up historically to deal with adversaries that want to defeat us in geopolitical terms.
