As silly as it is, it says something about our leadership that policy decisions and favors can be made on the basis of the benefactors brown-nosing.
In the case of Japanese and Korean heavy industry, I don’t really blame the people doing it, as they’re the victims of tariff policy being written by people with zero economic literacy; Akio Toyoda can either kiss ass to try to get a carve-out or have his company suffer enormously due to tariffs. The US government has put a stupid and unnecessary barrier between a company from allied country and American consumers who want to buy their products.
What concerns me is in areas more consequential than cars. We have already seen Trump agree to sell Saudi Arabia F-35s despite enormous security concerns, no doubt because of MBS’s ability to lather him with praise and bribe him with shiny trinkets.
