  1. Yeah let’s pretend it was 3D chess and not a dumb frail geriatric fuck who refuses to get out of the way so people who actually wanna make things better can take over.

But, Schumer didn’t support the shutdown deal. He wanted it to keep going. If anything, this is a victory for those Democrats like King or Shaheen.

  3. Famously consistent Donald Trump who has never flipped on any issues ever says something related to extending Barack HUSSEIN Obamacare subsidies (without actually implementing the policy), causing immediate euphoria and gloating

I think it’s too early to tell how this unfolds but even if this turns out well it’s an example of what Schumer is and what he – crucially – isn’t. Schumer has proved he’s effective at passing legislation during the first two years of the Biden administration, both with a party line vote and with bipartisan support. The fact that Biden got more done in those years than most people imagined belongs as much to Schumer as it does to Pelosi and Biden, in my view. With that said, being opposition leader is much more about uniting the party and building popular support and momentum than it is about passing legislation. And on both of these points, he has failed spectacularly. So while I generally think he deserves more credit than he’s gotten (compared to, say, McConnell who couldn’t even pass an Obamacare repeal with a larger margin to work with), he is simply a bad choice for the current job description. The fact that he might win this fight is not very relevant.

This is very much the whole “Chinese proverb” from Charlie Wilson’s War.

    – Schumer capitulated in March and enabled the OBBB to pass, this is bad! “We’ll see.”
    – Schumer has managed to land on Democrat’s most favorable policy category as the reason for the shutdown, this is good! “We’ll see.”
    – Schumer couldn’t keep Senate Dems in line and they capitulated without gaining anything beyond a promise of a vote in December, this is bad! “We’ll see.”
    – Schumer played Trump because now the White House is offering extensions to the subsidies, this is good!

    … We’ll see.

  6. I don’t think the Republicans ever planned to leave the healthcare situation where it was… I think we could have gotten to a very similar, if not identical, result without the shutdown

Chuck Schumer is not a good leader whether the ACA subsidies get extended or not. He chose something that was politically salient, but with no clear out and ended up with no clear win. Trump decided he’s going to save some of the representatives of the extremely unpopular move of making health care cost more after the elections and recent polling are showing him losing power. Trump managed to force Democrats to cave with no real concession so that he independently could make the decision and take credit. Democrats better display a lot of fury for putting Americans through the shutdown and refusing to negotiate, then forcing Americans to deal with the trauma and hard choices of the skyrocketing prices before actually doing what they should have done to begin with. I doubt they will be able to message any of that’s though beyond the select few.
