US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he would grant a pardon to former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was convicted in 2024 in the US for drug trafficking and is currently serving a 45-year prison sentence in New York City.
Juan Orlando Hernández was elected President of Honduras in 2013 and re-elected in 2017 in an election deemed fraudulent by international observers and the OAS – he was however recognized as legitimate president by the United States. A staunch religious conservative, Hernández enshrined mandatory prayers in public schools and the army, constitutionalized a ban on abortion and same-sex marriage, and was a stalwart ally of the US in Central America.
Hernández was found guilty of drug and arms trafficking by a US court in 2024, accepting millions of dollars in bribes from drug traffickers, including the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, and actively collaborated with them to anti-drug operations in Honduras.
Hernández’ pardon is likely tied to [US involvement in Honduras’ general elections](https://old.reddit.com/r/neoliberal/comments/1p82u6v/trump_intervenes_in_honduras_elections_to_support/) on Sunday, November 30, as the Trump administration is seeking to tilt the balance for the conservatives, represented by former Tegucigalpa mayor Tito Asfura, against socialist candidate Rixi Moncada of the incumbent leftist party LIBRE, and centrist candidate Salvador Nasralla, both labelled by Donald Trump as “communists”.
This pardon granted to a convicted drug trafficker who facilitated cartel access to the North American market stands in stark contrast to the professed “war on narco-terrorism” conducted by the Trump administration, and manifested by deadly strikes in the Caribbean and Pacific zones against unidentified boats.

Sure, why not
So how does this jive with toppling Maduro for his role in the drug trade?
