The Spanish police has dismantled a terror cell linked to the neo-Nazi transnational group The Base in the province of Castellón, located north of Valencia. Three men have been arrested and dozens of weapons, including handguns and knives, were seized alongside neo-Nazi propaganda material and tactical gear.
In a statement published on Monday, Spanish police announced that the three men are accused of illegally acquiring weapons, recruiting and training people in paramilitary tactics with terrorist goals.
The Base was founded in 2018 in the United States by White supremacist and former FBI employee Rinaldo Nazzaro, who recruited and trained neo-Nazi militias in the state of Washington with the explicit goal of accelerating a “race war” from which White people would triumph through armed struggle. Nazzaro has been living in Russia since 2017 and is suspected by US intelligence services of being tied to Russian intelligence services.
The Base is considered active in the US, Canada, Australia, the European Union and South Africa, and has been designated as a terrorist organization in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the EU, which adopted this designation in 2024, freezing assets belonging to suspected members of the group and strengthening counter-terrorism against this organization.
Considered as a European exception following its democratic transition in the 1970s, Spain has seen a resurgence of the far-right in recent years, through a youth voting surge for Vox, but also an increase in violent anti-immigrant actions.
