This could be good politically. However, it is a serious concern for the economy and our public finances. The OBR has been doing its predictions on public finances by estimating 350k yearly net migration to the UK under this Labour government’s term. It’s already falling to net 200k, even lower than bearish estimates. Now, it could fall into net negative next year. The OBR also found that every drop in net migration of 100k will lead to a £7 billion shortfall in the public finances. Even if many people are happy to see net negative migration, I don’t think they’ll be happy to see higher taxes.

    This is going to be like Brexit 2.0 if the UK loses billions pf pounds in tax revenue and there are fewer workers. This is what Reform supporters wanted.
