It says Europe also has “cratering birthrates” that are leading to the “loss of national identities and self-confidence”.
It questions whether European nations with such high levels of inward migration will uphold the shared principles of the Nato alliance, “or their alliance with the United States”, in the same way as those who signed the Nato charter.
In response, Washington will work to “cultivate resistance to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations”, and it sees potential allies in the “growing influence of patriotic European parties,” which are left unnamed but presumed to include Marine Le Pen’s National Rally in France, Vox in Spain, Reform in the UK, the AFD in Germany and Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy.
The suggestion that the White House will seek to boost opposition parties who share its principles, rather than work with whichever governments hold power, drew gasps from European diplomats.
