Six weeks after the city of El-Fasher was captured by the rebel paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), [investigations conducted by the Humanitarian Research Lab of Yale University](https://files-profile.medicine.yale.edu/documents/24ec5a80-6cd6-4145-addf-4ec88149a388) (pdf) assessed that no visible sign of civilian life remained in the capital of North Darfur, painting a grim fate for the 250,000 people who were estimated to be present when the city fell.
In a speech delivered in the House of Commons, Labour MP Sarah Champion, the Chair of the International Development Select Committee, revealed that British MPs had been privately briefed that at least 60,000 civilians are estimated to have been massacred by the RSF in the weeks following their victory against the Sudanese Armed Forces, who had been holding El-Fasher since the start of the civil war in April 2023.
Recouping data with refugee camps and authorities affiliated with the RSF, the Humanitarian Research Lab estimates that 150,000 people are still unaccounted for, in what would be the deadliest massacre of the 21st century.
The RSF are a paramilitary force that was formed from the infamous Janjaweed militias who carried out acts of genocide on behalf of the Sudanese state in the mid-2000s in Darfur. Characterized by experts as being animated by Arab supremacism, they have been accused of carrying out genocide against the non-Arab population of Sudan by the Biden administration in 2025.

Genuinely horrifying. Even if support for direct military intervention isn’t there, surely we can lean on the UAE to stop them supporting this madness
