I agree with Maher on this, but it’s noteworthy to mention that in general the region has had a regression in freedoms. Even if you have a secular dictator that keeps extremist factions at bay, once their rule falls apart you get those extremists in power. The problem is not per se the fall of the dictator but rather the value-system of the society that tolerates and breeds such extremism and hate. Though that’s their choice ultimately.
