Alfredo Díaz, a historical figure of Venezuela's opposition, died in state custody while at the El Helicoide prison in Caracas on Saturday, with local authorities reporting symptoms consistent with a heart attack.
Venezuela's Ministry of Penitentiary Services said in an official statement that Díaz felt unwell around 6:33 a.m., got immediate first aid, and was transferred to a hospital where he died minutes after his arrival. Meanwhile, Díaz's wife said she had received no medical documentation.
A member of the Acción Democrática party, Díaz served as governor of Nueva Esparta — a traditional opposition stronghold — from 2017 to 2021 and as mayor of Mariño for two terms between 2008 and 2017.
