  1. Submission statement

Looks like Mercosur is delayed once again because France and Italy have given in to farmers. Not that surprising for anyone who has followed this story for years. We will see if either country is willing to tank political unpopularity to push the deal through in the weeks ahead.

    > Dozens of French farmers dumped manure, garbage, tires and cabbages outside President Emmanuel Macron’s beach house in Le Touquet, northern France, on Friday, December 19, 2025, placing a coffin bearing the slogan “No to Mercosur” in a bid to pressure the European Union to block or delay a trade agreement with the South American bloc.

  2. EU f*rmers regularly get away with (literal) shit like this and yet there are people here thinking that just telling voters that the deal would reduce their grocery prices would turn them against them.

  3. I find you need some elements of cultural context to understand this bold move

    1. People in France oppose the deal (it’s not just the farmers), because they like small farms
    2. Small farms cause a relative lack of productivity which means it’s not profitable to farm things that needs lots of long term technological investments eg: dairy
    3. People don’t blame high prices on the farmers (who don’t make money) but on the coops and the resellers
    4. Thus why “cheaper food” isn’t a popular argument even among the (few) supporters of the deal
