  1. The piece is a critique of Korea’s psychological dependence on the United States at a moment when the US itself is stepping back from global leadership. It urges Koreans, especially political elites, to abandon deterministic thinking about America and instead develop a self-directed, flexible strategy suited to a fragmented world order.

The opinion piece emerged amidst power struggle within Korean government between “alliance faction” (동맹파) and “Self-reliance faction” (자주파) over the US. The alliance faction is a faction of DPK that tries to do joint projects with the US to advance Korean interest. Self-reliance faction is a faction of DPK which call for removal of the US influence to adapt post-liberal order. Recently, “self-reliance faction” is furious to President Lee Jae-Myung as he tries to improve relations with the US and Japan.
