  1. Submission statement: South Korea’s exports climbed to a record high of over 700 billion dollars, making the country the world’s sixth (or higher, depending on Dutch and Japanese data) largest exporter. The country has been able to weather global trade uncertainty including US protectionism thanks to robust exports of memory chips and ships.

Korea’s exports of chips and ships are expected to continue significantly increasing over the next several years thanks to booming global demand. The country’s dominance in high bandwidth memory and LNG container ships is propping up the economy. The automotive sector has also held up well thanks to continuously broadening export markets beyond the US. However, other legacy sectors like steel and petrochemicals have a murky outlook due to Chinese oversupply. The local EV battery industry has been among the hardest hit due to American anti-EV policies and Chinese competition.

Global trade conditions are less than ideal, but export economies like Korea can survive by differentiating its products, moving up the value chain, and diversifying trade partners.
