Submission statement: the United States has suspended all assistance to Somalia over claims a shipment of food under the custody of the World Food Programme (WFP) was embezzled by the Somalian government, who denied the alleged theft – a WFP source confirmed to the BBC that the shipment had not been stolen.

The announcement is part of a worldwide cutdown on international aid payments – and particularly by the US, by far the first contributor to humanitarian aid, under the second Trump administration.

In recent weeks, the Trump administration has also impulsed a campaign of demonization of Somali-Americans by latching onto the Minnesota fraud scandal to target this community, notably by ending deportation protections, pushing for revocation of legal immigration status, mulling mass denaturalizations, and labelling them as "garbage" who should "go back where they came from".

Somalia, one of the poorest and most unstable countries in the world currently battling a jihadist insurgency and multiple secessionist movements, was targeted by a US visa ban in December 2025. A quarter of its 18 million people are facing high levels of food insecurity and imminent famine conditions if aid is not resumed quickly.

  1. Trump admin: “We can be bigoted towards Somali Americans and Somalis in Somalia as well”

Also wtf is up with the right wingers weaponizing food? Trump with this and SNAP, Netanyahu in Gaza, and Putin in Ukraine? It’s absolutely disgusting

  2. Somalian government: We didn’t steal it!

    WFP: They didn’t steal it!

Isn’t there someone you forgot to ask?

Trump watched the beginning of black hawk down and thought it was modern day documentary.

  4. 9/10 chance that this is simply a result of the Trump admin, quite likely the man himself, having Somalians on the mind and arbitrarily deciding to do something mean to them.
