Taiwan’s envoy said China is not a reliable solution to Canada’s trade diversification efforts. The warning followed a Canada-China deal easing tariffs on Chinese EVs and Canadian canola. Canada is seeking alternatives as US tariffs under President Trump disrupt trade. The envoy argued China’s market access is politically driven and can be withdrawn abruptly. He urged Canada instead to deepen economic ties with Taiwan.

I don’t want Canada to abandon Taiwan. But unfortunately we have to trade with China for the same reason that Taiwan has to trade with America.
Without America reliably on-side, I don’t know what we can meaningfully do to restrain China’s imperial ambitions anyway.
But it does feel bad.

I get why they say this but it probably isn’t true.

Unfortunately for Taiwan, Canada doesn’t seem to care much.

If everyone in Taiwan could just start consuming 60X the usually amount of agricultural and oil products I’m sure there could be more of a dialogue on this issue.
